Horror Film Studies is Back!

We took a short break during the holiday season, but now we’re ready forge ahead with our horror film series, starting with a five-week in depth examination of the ten-episode HBO series “Lovecraft Country,” created by Misha Green and starring Jonathan Majors, Jurnee Smollett-Bell, and Courtney B. Vance.

Starting the second weekend of February 2021, we’ll be watching two episodes a week. As with our previous series, I’ll post weekly introductions and discussion questions for the featured episodes. I’ll also host weekly discussions via Zoom on Monday nights at 7pm (Pacific)

To enhance the literary and academic aspects of this horror film series, I also plan to include recommended readings for each week. My introductions and discussion questions will often include reference to these readings; however, I know people are busy and this series is “just for fun” so rest assured that any readings are optional. You’ll still be able to participate even if you only choose to watch the weekly episodes.

Here’s our Watching Schedule for “Lovecraft Country”

Episodes 1-2: February 13-14

Episodes 3-4: February 20-21

Episodes 5-6: February 27-28

Episodes 7-8: March 6-7

Episodes 9-10: March 13-14

As always, participation in these series is open to all and free to everyone (though donations are always appreciated). Lurkers are welcome, but please do notify me in advance to “enroll” if you plan to engage synchronously, would like to submit written answers to my discussion questions for feedback, or want to be invited to the Zoom discussions. Teachers please credit me if using these materials in your instruction. Thanks!
