Discussion Questions for “The Half of It”

Write a paragraph or two in response to each of the following prompts.

Maybe you thought this would be the week I let you off the hook and didn’t ask you to explain the title of the movie, but you’re wrong. That’s exactly where we’re starting. What is the meaning of this title, “The Half of It”? Half of what? Why half? Which half?

How does this movie introduce us to its protagonist, Ellie Chu? What is she doing when we first see her? What sort of a daughter is she? What sort of friend? Student? What are her hopes and dreams? Her fears? What things make her likeable and relatable for us as an audience?

What does this movie suggest about love? How does one show love? What are the How does love affect the people who feel it? Is love always a good thing? What challenges can love present for us?

If Ellie is our “Cyrano” character, what does she perceive as her metaphorical big, ugly nose? How does she compensate for this supposed flaw of hers? How does this “flaw” affect her relationships with the other characters? How the film address this issue and what is its final message to viewers?
